12 Pounds in a Week; 12 Inches of Waistline
Commit to Fit | Week 28
Author: Commit to Fit 2011 Winner, Dave McKew
I lost 12 pounds this week. It was shocking, but since I’d previously enjoyed 8.5, 9 and 10 pound drops in one week, it wasn’t exactly unprecedented.
Some factors that I believe contributed to this week’s huge drop:
- Over Labor Day weekend I drank too much and threw up several times. Not the healthiest way to lose weight, no question! But I’ll happily accept the benefits, since I suffered GREATLY for them. Trust me.
- For several days this week I had some sort of virus and one of these symptoms was appetite loss, so I simply wasn’t eating much.
- I was urinating a LOT while I was sick, clearly my immune system trying to flush something out, so I was hydrating even more than usual.
- My previous week’s weigh-in was in the evening, when it’s been proven that I am about 2 pounds heavier, so I think part of this 12 pounds was actually lost last week, not this week.

Author: Commit to Fit 2011 Winner, Dave McKew | I managed to lose 1 pound on my London vacation! Billy @ DIAKADI and Sarah @ Eating Free totally called it. I guess it was the increased exercise and my relaxed state, because Lord knows it wasn’t because I ate properly.Since I’d mentally prepared myself that I might gain weight on this vacation, I suppose the lesson is this: Next time, eat MORE! ‘A Better Place’
The rate at which I’m losing weight seems to be picking up. I lost more weight in July than I did in March, April, May or June. In fact, I’ve lost about 17 pounds in the past four weeks, which is kinda crazy if you think about it. At this point I’ve lost about 58.5 pounds since March 2nd.
Sleep and Recuperative Rest
American society tends to de-prioritize good sleep and rest habits for too much work and too much exercise. Current research shows plenty of sleep is a key factor in overall health and recuperative rest periods between workouts help the body recharge and get stronger.

‘Changes’
My new two-man play “Lost In Circulation: A Comedy About Getting Your Money Back” opened this weekend. I spent 24 hours at the theater this week; a mix of rehearsal time, tech/set-up time, and performance time. Whenever one of my shows opens, it’s a grueling week because I have to juggle my full time job with the time-consuming show commitments. This show was even more hectic because I additionally had to juggle three workouts at DIAKADI and an appointment at Eating Free alongside everything else.

‘FAQ: How Did You Do It?’
When I bump into people who weren’t previously aware that I’m losing weight, and I tell them I’ve lost over 50 pounds in 20 weeks, the first question is “How did you do it?”

‘Clothing, Part II: Looking Ahead’
I’m nearly 48 pounds down now. A few people have commented that I’m “swimming” in some of my clothes. This is because I have so few clothes that are the right size, that I still wear items (shirts, in particular) that are too large for me. And while this is not a problem amongst friends and co-workers who know I am losing weight, I feel a little odd when I meet strangers for the first time wearing clothes that are too big. ”No, I’m not Casper the Friendly Ghost; there’s actually a person under this large white T-shirt…” So I’m starting to phase the largest stuff out.
