All Sugar Is Not Created Equal
Author | Sarah Koszyk
Sugar comes in many shapes and sizes and some forms of sugar are better for us than others. When we read food labels, we can find three main food groups which contain sugar from various sources:
- Fruits
- Dairy products (milk & yogurt)
- Actual sugars/sweets (table sugar, honey, syrups, etc)
It is important to note where your sugars come from because the different forms of sugar affect our bodies in different ways:

Eat Your Food Versus Drink It

Eating your food versus drinking it is the preferred choice. When you eat food, you take more time to chew, swallow, and digest. When we drink our food, we can consume a greater number of calories in a shorter amount of time. Also, when we eat our food, we take more time to get it down, so we have a greater chance of our body sending the signal to our brain that we are full. Did you know it takes at least 20 minutes for the body to recognize fullness?
The Egg Predicament
Eggs always seem to be shunned because of a few myths that are now deemed untruths. Our oval friends are better for you than you may have thought!
As a kid my mom used to always say “You eat way too many eggs! Do you want a heart attack?!” This of course was a reaction to the presumed thought that eggs were loaded with cholesterol and would clog up my arteries. This misconception comes from the 1960’s when scientist thought that fat content, cholesterol and heart problems all had a direct connection.
Gluten: What it is and its Effects
There is a lot of talk about gluten and many people have started to cut it out of their diet. The question most people have is “WHY?”
WHAT IS GLUTEN?
Gluten is a protein molecule that is found in wheat, rye and barley products that is known to cause inflammation and digestive problems in about 60% of white-skinned people and 40% of dark-skinned people. Gluten is a more general name for the prolamins, which are protein fractions found in grains.

Let’s face it, buying organic can get expensive and with so many conflicting views it’s hard to know if spending more money on food guarantees a higher quality product. To help solve this problem, The Environmental Working Group released the 2011 Shoppers Guide to Pesticides in Produce.
