The 6 DIAKADI Elements: ‘Who Needs Their Ass Kicked?’

Author | Billy Polson, Founder + Owner of DIAKADI

Let me start by telling you guys a story… a crazy story… but a true one as well, based on a compilation of  ‘day in the life’ stories I have heard from clients over the years.

Your iPhone alarm goes off at 6a and after hitting snooze 3 times, you lay in the dark checking your phone for any emails that came in since falling asleep sometime after 1am. You make your way into the kitchen and reheat a large mug of coffee in the microwave (adding in 2 packs of Equal) and sip on it as you shower and shake the groggy hang over from your daily sleeping pill.

Dressed and out of the house in 20 minutes (a second mug of reheated, artificially sweetened coffee in hand), you drive to the office, checking your phone for voicemail that came in from the European office overnight. While typing a quick note to your boss you hear a siren and see a flash of lights behind you.  CHP pulls you over and gives you a TRIPLE ticket for texting while speeding at 82 mph IN THE COMMUTER LANE (oh yes…true story). Congratulations to Devon Crosby-Helms

DIAKADI would like to congratulate Devon Crosby-Helms on her following accomplishments:

On March 20, 2011 she qualified for the Olympic Trials in the marathon at the LA Marathon and set a great PR of 2:43 in some of the worst weather you can run a marathon in!
On April 9, 2011 Devon won the 2011 USATF 100k National Championship (road) and punched her ticket
to the WC100k in September in the Netherlands.  She also ran a PR of 7:46 which puts her as one of the top 10 fastest women All-Time for North America at the distance.
This past Tuesday, April 19, 2011 my good friend Krissy Moehl and I went out to break an 8 year old women’s FKT (fastest known time) record at the Grand Canyon’s Rim to Rim to Rim. We ran a 9:12 and set the new FKT together.
The rest of the year should be fun and hopefully I little less dense in terms of big races back to back. I am not quite down with the current onslaught of racing as I head to Australia on the 8th of May to race the NF100k down there. After that, I have a bit of a break before I go after some more FKT’s, the World 100k championship and pursue the A standard for the OT (Olympic Trials).

Devon Crosby-Helms Road to the Western 100

DIAKADI Body would like to recognize one of our members Devon Crosby-Helms as a Do It All Kick Ass Doing It athlete.

Devon is an Ultra-Marathon runner and is currently training for the Western States 100 Ultra Marathon.  The Western States Endurance Run, known commonly as the Western States 100, is a 100 mile long (161 km) ultra marathon that takes place on trails in California’s Sierra Nevada annually on the last weekend of June. The race starts at the base of the Squaw Valley ski resort and finishes at the Placer High School track in Auburn, California. Runners climb a cumulative total of 18000 feet (5500 m) and descend a total of 23000 feet (7000 m) on mountain trails before reaching the finish. Because of the length of the race, the race begins at 5:00 A.M. and continues through the day and into the night. Runners finishing before the 30 hour overall time limit for the race receive a bronze belt buckle, while runners finishing in under 24 hours receive a silver belt buckle.

Devon trains at DIAKADI with Josh Moberg. Since Devon is training “in season,” most of the work done with Josh is working on her balance, core and flexibility.  As most runners are not flexible and have poor muscle balance, the idea behind this type of training is to allow Devon to be in a more healed and balanced state prior to the abuse of a grueling 100 mile run on her body.  Josh incorporated a great deal of Yoga and stretching.  Josh also incorporated strength exercises using Devons body weight and core strengthening exercises.  Devon says she notices a huge difference in her flexibility as well as her core strength, she hopes this will give her a defined edge in the outcome of the race.

Great Job Devon!  We are all very proud and wish you luck!

DIAKADI Body is now sponsoring two ultramarathon runners -

Devon Crosby Helms and Jonathan Gunderson.

Training with Josh Moberg throughout the week, Devon and Jonathan compete in ultramarathons, which are any sporting events that involve running longer than the traditional marathon length of 42.195 kilometers (26.2188 miles). There are two types of ultramarathon events: those that cover a specified distance, and those that take place during specified time (with the winner covering the most distance in that time). The most common distances are 50 and 100 miles, or 50 and 100 kilometers.

If you have any questions about our athletes or ultramarathon events, ask Josh or the DIAKADI Body Staff.
